Howrah, West Bengal : Hindi University, West Bengal recently commemorated Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee Fortnight, a series of intellectually stimulating and culturally enriching events organized from 30 June to 4 July 2026 under the visionary guidance of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nandini Sahu. The fortnight’s programmes emphasised the life, works, ideas and enduring legacy of the eminent educationist, statesman and nation-builder Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee , an initiative that encouraged active participation by faculty, staff and students alike.

The celebration commenced on 30 June 2026 with an Essay Competition on ‘Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee and His Contribution to the Making of West Bengal’. Conducted by Dr. Rekha Kumari Tripathi, Faculty and Coordinator, Translation Cell, Hindi University, the competition witnessed enthusiastic engagement from students of Hindi University who submitted thoughtful essays exploring Mukherjee’s impact on regional socio-political identity and the historical evolution of West Bengal.

On the same day, a Reading Session on the Life and Works of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was held. Chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nandini Sahu, the session was conducted by Mr. Biswajit Prasad Hazam. Discussants, including Dr. Soumita Mitra and Dr. Ajit Kumar Das, both Guest Faculty members of Hindi University, led an insightful dialogue exploring varied facets of Mukherjee’s career — from his academic excellence to his commitment to national integration and public service. The interactive discussions drew active contributions from students and faculty, providing a deeper understanding of Mukherjee’s multifaceted personality and enduring relevance.

The fortnight culminated on 4 July 2026 with a Special Lecture on Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee and His Language Policy, reflecting the intersection of linguistic identity, education and nation building. The lecture, held under the patronage of Prof. Nandini Sahu, featured Prof. Ajanta Paul, former Principal of WCC, as the keynote speaker. Her lecture offered thought-provoking perspectives on Mukherjee’s language policies and their implications for education and cultural discourse in contemporary India.

The events at Hindi University echoed broader educational mandates in the state. Across West Bengal, colleges and universities have embraced the observance of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Fortnight from 23 June to 6 July, following directives from the Higher Education Department to foster awareness about his life and contributions among students and educators alike. 

Prof. Nandini Sahu’s leadership in steering this initiative reflects her commitment to academic excellence, cultural engagement and holistic learning. Colleagues from the faculty lauded her efforts in ensuring that academic programmes are not only intellectually rigorous but also socially meaningful, encouraging students to engage with historical figures and ideas that have shaped modern India. Participation from students , through competitions, discussions and critical reflections , further underscored the university community’s eagerness to learn and contribute.
